Hi Ingrid3, This spider is distributed throughout Canada, The United Staes of America and Mexico. There is some information and pictures in https://bugguide.net/node/view/470078 and also in https://auth1.dpr.ncparks.gov/arachnid/accounts.php It seems that the appearance of this species is varied, depending on gender, life stage etc., but from the beginning, you were right about the web and the family Dyctinidae.
