Field Notes

Description:

I have taken photos from as many angles as possible. The beetle' body is about 5cm long. I placed a piece of cardboard under it to show the features against a neutral background. It was a very active beetle and kept climbing up and down the walls.

Notes:

This huge beetle has been in our garden (Pretoria, South Africa) for two days now. It kept coming into the house as if it wanted to get out of the direct sunlight? Never seen anything like it and no idea how to identify it?

Species ID Suggestions

Derby's Flower Beetle

Dicranorrhina derbyana

Thank you Schmeltzy- I had a look on the web and it seems the appearance of this beetle depends on where it is found. My sighting appears to be a male? Really a beautiful beetle and glad I was privileged to find it in my garden!
Hi andrevanzyl7, welcome to Project Noah! Great spotting. I have relocated it to the Arthropods category for you.
