Field Notes

Description:

Small (about the same size as a water rail, which I spotted within a metre of this bird), very dumpy wader. Yellow-ish legs. Bill broad and pointed, like a dagger. Clear white mark over the eyes. Any ideas?

Species ID Suggestions

Common Sandpiper / Andarríos chico

Actitis hypoleucos

Yes, not enough detail to confirm it definitely but the shape is about right and the size is at the lower end of Water Rails which can vary widely. It may be a juvenile.
Possibly. I know the picture quality it poor, but he was quite far away and the sun wasn't properly up when I took this, giving poor lighting. And he was skittish! Will try to go back at some point soon to see if I can get a better photo. Will check common sandpiper now. Thanks, Malcolm.
