Field Notes

Description:

Grasshopper from the family Acrididae and subfamily Oedipodidae (band-winged grasshoppers). This was a good-sized grasshopper. In flight, it would show yellow wings banded in black.

Habitat:

Open field, on and beside the trail.

Notes:

Located in Buffalo Rock State Park near Ottawa, IL.

LuckyLogan -- Thanks for the suggestion. The Carolina Locust looks similar, but this one appears to have longer antennae. I've changed the photo to one that shows the head better.
