Field Notes

Description:

About 5 feet, square stemmed, stems green with red at branches, not flowering at this time. However, one young specimen a few feet away was showing very small, yellow-green colored buds that could resemble the flowers on a nettle plant that is pictured on Wikipedia.

Habitat:

Nearly dry creekbed, deciduous trees filtering the sunlight very thoroughly, sharing space with various shrubs and grasses.

Notes:

Matches description of stinging nettle but it didnt sting me after repeated attempts. Main visible difference is veining on the leaves; the channels are shallower and thinner. I found a dozen specimens in the creekbed, always tallest where there was still water visible, but I didn't find a single one growing away from the creek. I took a cutting of one and it was completely wilted within ten minutes--definitely will need a moist container next time.
