Field Notes

Notes:

This little one has been roaming my yard for about a week, avoiding the sun and searching for water. I would like to relocate it so my dogs do not harass or hurt it. Any information on it would be greatly appreciated.

Species ID Suggestions

Eastern Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina carolina

The best thing to do for these turtles is to move them to a safer place (if they are in danger of injury) in the direction they are moving and not far from where they were originally found. They have very small home ranges and if moved too far away, they can spend their lives trying to return to their home areas.
If your yard is not fenced, you may have difficulty relocating this guy without him returning. If you do move him, make sure you put him somewhere where he won't get run over, get attacked by dogs, or drown. Here's an article on what happens to relocated box turtles that may be of interest: http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news/2010/11/operation_box_turtle_rescue.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/
