Description:

He looks like some sort of cricket. Except crickets are brownish. This guy is black. You can see the noise makers sticking out of his rear end area.

Habitat:

Outdoors. Woodsy area. In shrubs.

Notes:

When we found him he was alive, but close to death. He was only moving his mouth.

Hi there. The structures hanging off the back end are known as cerci, and they are used for sensory purposes. Male crickets make noise that's known as stridulation, or the rubbing together of body parts. These animals might rub one of their legs against their wing to produce audible sound. Quite a few invertebrates do this to attract mates or repel predators. It's really very interesting. :-)
