Field Notes

Description:

Light green with a red stripe that runs across the shoulder above the head. Carapace is nearly smooth and does not cover all of the wings. The body is flat and triangle shaped; the head is flat and triangle shaped, angling down and attached below the shoulder ridge. The tips of the antennae are red, as are the ends of each limb. It affected a very strong grip on the plant that it was found on, but can't climb glass very well (the picture shows about as high as it could get before falling). It's only about a cm long, maybe slightly longer.

Habitat:

The local area is in a mediterranean climate, suburban, with primarily deciduous trees. Historically a grassland/deciduous forest area.

Notes:

This is the second specimen in a week that we've found clinging to our fruiting Jalapeno plant. They don't have any trouble flipping themselves over and are apparently very clingy. We're hoping that this a garden-friendly insect that would function as a bio control of pest bugs, not some leaf eating terror that'll spoil our jalapenos.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

After looking around, I suspect that this is a variety of green stink bug, either genus chinavia or nezara. I tried both bugguide.net and whatsthatbug.com.
