Field Notes

Description:

This one was in a web. He appears to have a shell on his back and is about 3/8ths of an inch long. It was very difficult to make him crawl. It was windy here today and the web was moving back and forth. I think he was hanging on for dear life. (-: I will return tomorrow morning and get more shots of this one if the wind is not blowing and if he is still around.

The third photo added 05 Jan 2014. The fourth photo added 23 Jan 2014.This photo has been modified to accent his web.

Habitat:

Yeah, I think so too ChiefRedEarth. He's gone now. Haven't made any additional progress on conclusively identifying him yet. Joe
Lynette, That's good that we agree. I will leave this one unidentified though since I am not sure either.
Well I can't be sure since I'm quite unfamiliar with all those other ones listed, but you are right it does look just like the images I'm seeing online.
Hi Lynette. I have looked at as many photos of the various species below, the ones in the WSC. Many of the species I could not find photos of but of the photos I did find, the Cyclosa insulana looks closest to my spider.
Hi Joe, This looks like a Cyclosa species to me. The World Spider Catalog (WSC) lists the following Cyclosa in that area: baakea, banawensis, bifida, conica, dives, dosbukolea, insulana, ipilea, krusa, mulmeinensis, otsomarka, parangmulmeinensis, parangtarugoa, saismarka, & tricolor. That's a lot of choices!
