Field Notes

Description:

Very small bug probably only about 3/4" long. Tan color. Body resembles beetle with wider legs at the upper leg than the lower. Legs end clawlike. A long appendage, probiscus perhaps?, is in the middle of the head with two slender, filament-type attachments at right angles about three-quarters of the way down. Eyes are flat.

Habitat:

Found on a leaf on the butterlfly bush. The insect did not move from the leaf except to reposition for several hours.

Notes:

This is a very small insect and, unfortunately, was hard to photograph. The pictures are small but I hope there's enough detail for an identification. The insect did not seem to be perturbed by my presence or the presence of the camera even when I attempted to photograph it extremely close.

This is an acorn weevil. They use their long proboscis to drill holes in nuts, such as acorns.
