Field Notes

Description:

Small wasp approx. 8mm long. The raised bump (on the trunk of a Eucalypt) in the photo has a small entrance toward the bottom. The wasp was very focused on this hole, placing its legs within the hole (pic 3) ad shuffling about, as well as, making a strange dipping motion with its abdomen.

Definitely in the family Chalcididae (Chalcidoidea). NOT a gall wasp - the lump it is sitting on looks a bit like a wover pupal case of a moth or something similar.

It's one of the Chalcid wasps (Chalcididae) Vinny but very difficult to get much further on these. Probably a gall wasp but in Australia we have only about half a dozen Cynipids and almost all introduced. It looks like a gall wasp to me (family Cynipidae)- but i'm not sure about Australian species...
