Field Notes

Description:

Chalky white looking mushroom. Very stiff stalk with a crumbly texture on its surface. Found in our 'urban' backyard. About 3-4'' tall and diameter of stock about the size of a quarter. Cap diameter not much bigger.

Habitat:

Backyard with patchy grass. Found about 10' from the base of a big tree; possibly above the tree's root system. A hot dry summer had preceded about 4" of rain 4 days prior to this spotting. Current temp was about 95 deg. F.

Notes:

We see these around from time to time but have never bothered to identify them. I'm sure its a common mushroom but any help would be appreciated.
