Field Notes

Description:

Prettiest latrine I've ever seen. I spotted these three, very different-looking piles of scat right next to each other on a fallen tree. They were all around the same size (12 mm diameter and 5-7 cm long). One was black, smooth, and hard; one was grainy, greenish, and crumbly; and the other, which was fairly fresh and juicy, was a spectacular reddish color with lots of stuff in it.

Habitat:

I found these three piles of scat on a fallen tree along a ridge in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

I'm not sure if these are all from the sane kind of animal, but I'm assuming they are. So far, I'm thinking they are either fox or bobcat. But, it was suggested that they could be from a raccoon. There is a fresh water source not far from where I spotted the scat, and I have seen bobcats, foxes, and coyotes in this area.
