Field Notes

Description:

This was a small plant, (enlarged to show detail) with a green steam with spiky looking article sticking out. The spikes have brownish, crusty-looking zigzags along the bottom of the spike, and the brown parts flake off very easily and fall on the steam. The spikes don't hurt to touch, and because of that, this plant is showing some signs of mimicry. The spikes are shaped that way so animals and bugs won't want to touch that plant and eat it up, and the plant can now survive for a longer time.

Habitat:

It was quite a small species, and it was growing on a tree. It was not near to the ground, but was near to the other plants of the same species. It most likely grew by having some of the nutrients from the tree, since it was not growing in the soil for it to give it the minerals and nutrients it needed.
