Field Notes

Description:

Appears to be a very large spider with spiky "hairs" on legs, very large (I'm not sure this is the correct term) abdomen. Legs are bands of black and yellow/orange. Reclusive; is living on the underside of a leaf which is fronted by a second leaf. Has a huge web spun betwen plants and is dining on yellowjackets.

Habitat:

This one is living in my butterfly bush but there is a second one taking up residence at the end of the drainpipe. The area here is wooded; they are in the yard.

Notes:

This series is of the same subject the photos were taken over two days in an attempt to get different views.

These spiders sure do look a lot alike, RiekoS. The legs sure are a good match. I'm not sure about the red on the back of my spot; I don't think I ever managed to get a full body shot of it.
Do you think this spot is the same spider? I found this in near Catskill Mt. area. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15368207
