Field Notes

Description:

Tall suckering tree that grows up to 25m in height. Pinnately compound leaves with ~17-23 leaflets. Leaflets are lance-shaped and have serrated edges, but lack leaf glands at the base. The bark on mature trees is deeply grooved, almost like a Douglas fir. Right now there are several catkins on the trees, and the leaves are turning yellow (not red).

Habitat:

Found on a high spot in a Wildlife Management Area in Langley, British Columbia. The surrounding forest includes mixed stands of paper birch, red alder, black cottonwood, willow, western red cedar, Douglas fir, etc.

Notes:

Tree was originally thought to be an infestation of Tree of Heaven, but lacks the leaf glands at the base of the leaf, amongst several other distinguishing features. It also does not appear to be bitternut hickory, white or green ash, boxelder, staghorn or shining sumac, or black or white walnut.
