About 18 inches long
No musk
Shook its tail as if it had a rattle but didn't
light brown with dark brown spots top and bottom with a dark brown mask

Habitat:

On the street in my north sf bay neighborhood

I'd put my money on gopher snake. Glossy snakes coloration and pattern are a bit different
Okay now I'm thinking it us a glossy snake. Maybe with climate change the are moving north. Googling glossy snake brings me an exact match
I think Karen's right. I know that sometimes the common names get mixed up: Bull snake, Pine snake, Gopher snake -- common names can be terrible! Pituophis catenifer sayi looks pretty good! Check out Karen's link!
