Field Notes

Description:

Low growing plant found on the edge of lawn and flower beds. Leaves are covered in bristles. Each leaf tip also has a stiffer bristle extending from the tip. My first thought was some type of wild lettuce, but doesn't quite fit the typical description.

Habitat:

Lawn/garden edge

Species ID Suggestions

Thistle

I don't know what these are, but they sure hurt when I stepped on them barefoot when I was a kid!!
Looks like a type of thistle. I can't really tell without a flower though. I thought perhaps Cirsium vulgare, but the leaves look different. It looks a lot like the thistle species you see in Japan, but there are so many species that look very similar.
