Field Notes

Description:

Small trumpet-shaped galls.

Habitat:

I'm unsure if the tree was a small Acacia or Leucodendron. Coastal. I've spotted similar before, I don't know if it's exactly the same. I'm keeping this one in a jar to see if anything emerges.

I've just cut one open Martin & they are empty down that tube, it's hollow. The top hasn't opened to let anything out, so would it be correct to say that an insect sting is responsible for this reaction in the leaf?
Fascinating Leanne. Would you consider cutting one open? They are either a gall inducing bug or an egg/larva of a fly or wasp. I would guess the first.
