Field Notes

Description:

This is a cockroach-looking insect we found when moving some old furniture up from the basement. Total length about 2 1/2 inches long. I was confused about the species because the back end looks similar to a cricket. While the rest of the insect resembles a cockroach, its body is much wider than normal for roaches around here. It also has a very black shade to it. Most of our roaches are brown or tan in color.

Habitat:

Hiding between two boards in a dark, cool, concrete basement. Kansas in March.
