Field Notes

Description:

NOTE* Project Noah requires selection of a category upon submission of a sighting; fish is my best guess but I very well may be wrong... ;-)

Found on East Beach; near Charlestown, Rhode Island, U.S.A.

Bone appears to be heavily worn; presumably missing a substantial portion of its original mass.

Almost resembles a shoulder blade and has an interesting internal structure of which appears delicate but upon applying pressure proves to be quite strong.

Very interested to find out what animal it came from!

Thank you in advance!

Habitat:

(Edit*) Found sticking out of the sand at low tide a few feet from the water (at East Beach).

Ah - that would make sense - a bone that is both lightweight and strong would belong to a bird.... Yes it was found at low tide a few feet from the water. Thank you for the response - I'll look into bird skeletons and sternums!
Not from a fish...as you can see, it is compact bone of sorts with a lot of air trabiculae and open pores...this suggests it most likely from a bird...it looks like a part of a sternum...did you find it by the water?
