Field Notes

Description:

Bird chicks in a nest made of dried grass.

Habitat:

This is in a tree planted next to a multi-level parking deck at my job in Atlanta, GA.

Notes:

Heard these birds chirping like crazy when I got out of my car. Looked over the edge of the parking garage and was only about 5 feet above this nest. I kept checking the nest for a couple of days and sadly, about 3 days after this photo, all the chicks were killed. They were being eaten by crows! I don't know if the crows killed them, but they finished the job.

No, I never saw the parents. Every time I visited the nest it was just the chicks. Thanks a lot for the ID suggestion though.

Could be a goldfinch nest, going purely off nest shape and material. Chicks are very tough to ID. I don't suppose you have a description of the parents? Sad to hear they didn't make it. Crows are regular nest raiders. :\
