Ok, so I just found a similar mantis, possibly the same one dead and being ravaged by ants. I inspected the wings without trying to spread them because they would most likely crumble. Anyways, the wings had black stripes.
Very interesting. I was wondering about the shape of the abdomen. He didn't open his wings, but I might have gotten a shot of his legs.
It's also possible that this is Mantis religiosa - European Mantis. http://bugguide.net/node/view/22947 Stagmomantis californica (additional reference): http://bugguide.net/node/view/7985 Did you happen to see him open his wings or get a look at the inside of his front legs? There are some distinguishing markings that may help you determine which it is. Both species come in brown. I can tell you that this is a male. You can tell because of the long narrow abdomen.
Stagmomantis californica, common name California Mantis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagmomantis_californica
