The Mexican bean beetle has eight spots on each elytra.
Rats! Clearly I was attempting the easy solution. However, I have located one lead based partially on your observation that it is larger than the average ladybird beetle. My suggestion is usually spotted but variable in name and (in this image at least) in body. (scroll down) http://www.drkaae.com/InsectIDPt2/Chapter1Beetle%20Part1.htm This is a vegetarian mexican bean beetle and would be exotic (introduced). What do you think? http://www.flickr.com/photos/macaw-frey/4852745167/
I have another spotting 2 weeks earlier than this one: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/14065063
Martin, these beetles are really solid orange. I have been monitoring them in my garden and none of them developed spots. They are a bit bigger than the spotted ones.
Nice spotting. It's hard to find a match for this solid orange lady beetle. When a beetle is freshly molted, the colors may appear an hour or two after. If that is the case with this one, it may still develop spots.
yh it a lady bird sorry dont know exact id there are many possibilities.
