Field Notes

Description:

Very large spider basically gray in color; some banding on legs with areas of beige and black. Legs have short spiky "hairs". Spider is probably 2" across.

Habitat:

Seen living on hosta leaves. Has spun a very thick, deep habitat but not of web structure. It has connected a couple areas of leaf with this thick, heavy material and created a "hole" where it can remain out of sight.

Notes:

Another insect (unknown to me) blundered into the massive spun area and the spider left the shelter to attack. I watched for some time as the spider moved around the insect often using one appendage to "strike".
