Field Notes

Description:

A fearsome column of marching ants, fearsome because they were so fast and vigorous. Both soldiers with large orange heads and workers were present (pictures 2 and 3). Their mandibles were thick and powerful (picture 6). These were not leaf cutters nor army ants. In picture 5, an individual is carrying an egg. The workers were about 6 mm long. It was night and the underbrush was too thick to follow them.

Habitat:

Crossing a forest trail, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, area of the Bat Cave about 10 minutes east of Puerta Calakmul.
