Field Notes

Description:

Small snake found while mowing -- fortunately not injured. Size <12" . Broad head when first found. Now in a bucket until I can ID him/it. Looks like a Copperhead but not versed in this stuff enough to say for sure.

Habitat:

eastern Connecticut; forest

Nice one, grassyhill. I think Ashley is right this is an Eastern Hognose.
Thanks Mark. I think she nailed it. I have never seen one and the snout is the telltale! I will post a better pic where this feature is more evident.
Welcome grassyhill. Our ranger Ashley says this is probably an Eastern Hognose (Heterodon platirhinos). I'm not from your part of the world but I looked them up in Googs and I'm amazed at how variable they are.
