Field Notes

Description:

This plant appeared to be a bush, except that its leaves were not growing densely and its stem was fairly thin. The branches were also thin, and a light brownish-grayish color. The plant was about four-and-a-half feet in height. Its leaves were ovular in shape and grew outward in bunches; the larger leaves were located on the outside of these bunches and the smaller leaves were located on the inside. Veins on the surface of the leaves ran diagonally upwards, branching off from the main stem in the center of each leaf. Within the clusters of leaves, many brown ants were observed. A few of these insects are captured in the images shown.

Habitat:

This plant was sighted on the Kamehameha schools Kapālama campus, in a grassy area outside of the bottom level of the Pauahi administrative building.
