Field Notes

Description:

This is an owl with short stubby ears and mottled grey feathers. Does not appear to be mature but when perched is nine to ten inches tall.

Habitat:

Being in south central Montana it is hard to say that a coniferous tree is this birds usual habitat, but that is where I found this owl.

Species ID Suggestions

Eastern Screech Owl

Megascops asio maxwelliae

Click on the link I posted, "join" the mission, then come back to your spotting and "edit"...the mission should be listed and you can just click on it and re-save your spotting. BTW...love your name!! ;-)
Christy I would love to add it but I have no idea how to do that.
Great spotting!! I'd love you to add this guy to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627557
Stocky proportions make it a Screech. Range and extent of white on the scaps suggests Eastern over Western.
Looks like a Great Horned Owl.Owls love conifers. We have a snowy owl living in a pine.
