I agree about the uncertainty in the world of fungi. I took a mycology class in university and we were only responsible for identification to genus level most of the time. There is just a lot of variability within species even. Very challenging.
You're welcome - but I wouldn't be too certain about it. It's a possibility, but I had so many surprises with fungi identifications...glad I could give a direction to check at least.
I originally thought chanterelles too, but I thought the "gills" ended rather abruptly high up on the stipe, and the color is not like any I've seen. Maybe it is this C. cinnabarinus though, those pictures look similar. Hopefully they are, I'd like to taste a few.
