Field Notes

Description:

Unfurled umbrella shaped fungus. In early stage it is gold-colored shading to brown spot on the top. In later stage, it is brown/gray. Stalk is medium.

Habitat:

Growing out of and at the base of a decaying tree stump. A layer of leaves are on the ground surrounding the stump. There has been a lot of rain lately resulting in constant dampness and wetness of the ground.

Notes:

This fungus seemed to last for only about one day. I had gone back the next day to photograph it again and found nothing but black shoots where the fungus had been.

I'm behind on responding to comments, RiekoS, but I do want to thank you for your input. The mushrooms definitely seem to be the same and the information you shared seems to fit perfectly. It's too bad they "melted" right away; they fascinated me!
Mica cap (Coprinellus micaceus)? I am not expert on mushrooms, so you should wait for the experts to tell you what they are. Here is my spotting (they were gone the next day too). http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/14764181
