Field Notes

Description:

No apparent legs, large head with what look to be two compound eyes, possible breathing holes on both lateral sides of the first small segment after the larger. 2 mm long white bristles dispersed over entire body.

Habitat:

Fell out of a piece of firewood (hardwood) I was chopping.

Notes:

Strangest thing I have seen in a long time. I assume it to be some sort of wood boring beetle but not sure what kind.

Yes, that larger section is definitely more like a thorax section. Its head does extend from that though. Looked at it using a stereo scope on 30X def. no legs. Thanks for commenting :)

Interesting find. Do you mean 2cm instead of 2mm? I think what you call a head might not be the head and the eyes are probably not those large pale yellow patches. I think I can see 6 thoracic legs when I zoom the pic so the head might be a very tiny thing on the front of that big lump.... ?? I agree it is possibly a beetle larva
