Check for hairs on the petioles (= corymbosa) or no hairs (= articulata (the most accepted name for O. rubra). Both are cultivated in China but only corymbosa has escaped so far (and it is now very common).
Thank you smcrenshaw. Just looked up wikipedia and found that Shamrock is known as a symbol of Ireland, with St. Patrick having used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity, according to legend. I didn't know that!
Shamrock. I can't seem to find a species for your vibrant purples blossom, though. Very pretty.
