Description:

About 1 mm in length, dark gray segmented bodies with yellow legs and V-shaped antennae. The underneath of one showed a pointy, yellow spine projection tucked underneath its body (springtail?). Hundreds or thousands in clusters floating on a shallow puddle in an area with some trees and shrubs on March 27, 2017 in Missoula, MT, USA.

Habitat:

A puddle on a wide trail in a riparian area with some evergreens, aspens, and shrubs.
