Field Notes

Description:

This insect was about 10 cm long, and had 6 legs and 2 long antennae. It was brownish gray in colour, mottled like the bark of a tree, and had frills on its side and legs, possibly as bark camaflauge. The head is large, with 2 silver compound eyes. It's hard to see in the picture, but there were 2 sets of folded wings, appearing to be similar to transparent grasshopper wings, and there were two protrusions at the back of the abdomen.

Habitat:

Not sure where this thing lives, but this is the first time I have ever seen one. It is shown on a teak post in a surf hostel in Costa Rica.

Muchas gracias! My guests will be happy to hear it's harmless :)
Prisopodidae, Prisopodinae, Prisopus sp., and in this case I think it might be Prisopus berosus. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/124026073 http://www.boldsystems.org/index.php/Taxbrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=479927 http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1242341 http://www.flickr.com/photos/30221169@N04/2829926473/
