Description:

Does anyone know what might have made this hole. I found it at the bottom of my garden under a big Hawthorn tree, next to a log pile I have created over the years for wildlife. It is about 10cm (4 inches) wide, and appears to go down at a slant. Any ideas as to what animal has made this would be much appreciated.

Thank you AustinC for your suggestions. We do have a small pond (but not near the site of this hole though). Next door neighbours have a pond as well, and there are three enormous ponds on the conservation site over our garden fence.

My guess would be the European Warer Vole, they make burrows similar to these, especially by streams and lakes so if you're near a body of water it's a good shot. Their burrows are generally over 7cm so for you to say 10 is good. Without visually sighting the animal we'll never be sure but from the descriptions provided it's a good shot. I'll provide you with resources in the comment below, once I retrieve them.
