Field Notes

Description:

Creature found on land. It has a crab-like shell with eight black shiny legs that are tentacle-like. I was unable to identify it.

Habitat:

It was spotted on Fort Stewart, a military base in Savannah, GA in a wooded area.

Notes:

This was taken by an individual in my community who is known on Facebook as "Mighty Kirby" and stated that this is a "living creature that moves." I do not know how large it is. Can anyone identify?

Earth star. Don't know about the "moving" bit though..... walking fungi sounds like something from "Night of the Living Dead".... lol.
I would say earth star fungus of some sort - take a look at this link which shows one very similar http://djringer.com/photos/v/cedar-ridge-070418/earth-star-fungus-1.jpg.html
Nice one, Kristina. Perhaps it is a Morgan's earthstar (Astraeus morganii), which unfolds itself when wet. The link shows a time lapse video of this process. https://blog.mycology.cornell.edu/2014/06/03/twinkly-earthstars/
