Field Notes

Description:

Small segmented body, with a long rear section, ending in pinchers. About 1/2" long. Raised rear section up over head as to sting/pinch. Looked like an earwig, but not the typical house kind.

Habitat:

Kitchen, pursued by cat.

Species ID Suggestions

rove beetle

Staphylinidae (family)

Comments (2)

Probably the tribe Staphylinini, as that is where most of our larger species are classified. The overwhelming majority of rove beetles are overlooked because they are small and secretive.
