Field Notes

Description:

This is another first one for me. These wasps used a very long leaf to build their nest. Each cell of the nest is built with a piece of the leaf rolled to the shape of a conic funnel along the stem, and reinforced with what seems to be the same material used in common nests. I can't say if the wasps cut the leaf in the shape they wanted, or if they utilized an already worn leaf. Anyway, this is the first time I see a vertical nest, instead of the common side-by-side cells ones.
