You would need a sideways view to get a look at the poison injecting proboscis on the head to know better.

This looks very much like what I call an assassin bug. There are two apparent species in the California foothills: one is mostly green with some black outlining and another is black with a red X. The UCD Bohart museum of entomology (http://bohart.ucdavis.edu/) has some great samples in their collection but not online yet. Sorry, I can't remember the exact species name.
