Field Notes

Description:

On the origin of faeces (not my joke - some wag published a paper with this title a few years ago): I imagine that this was provided by a small mammal, e.g. a stoat or pine marten. The beech leaf gives an idea of the size.

Habitat:

Fairly open woodland, beech trees and conifers.

Notes:

I have seen heaps like this many times in this area.

Thanks Selma. I'm afraid that I do not have the facilities to perform such detailed analysis, but it is interesting to know that such techniques can determine so much.
Would a chemical analsysis be required to determine the gender?
Hi Selma, Thanks. I'm sure that it is something like that. Perhaps the animal stands upright, rather like a meerkat, to look out for food or danger.
