Description:

Quick running bug, black with yellow "puzzlepieces" on its back. About 5cm

Habitat:

Outside our gate, Rasada Phuket near jungle and mangroves.
It was night.

This is a Ground Beetle(Carabidae). One name that has been given is Yellow-spotted Ground Beetle. There has been some discussion in previous spottings at PN as to whether it is in the genus Panageus or Craspedohorus. See the discussion here. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8470809
