Field Notes

Description:

Not 100% certain that this is a living organism. It appeared on my balcony light fitting back in August, I thought it was a small moth at first, then a small insect, but now I think it might be something growing. I tried removing it today, thinking it was something which had died but it is well stuck! Any ideas anyone?

Habitat:

Balcony light fitting. Where the moths and spiders gather every night.

Thanks for that information. Based on this I have added it to the "Animal Architecture" mission.
It reminds me a little of a Mantid Oothecae (that is the foam structure they bild with their eggs in it, which then hardens). I'm not 100% sure that is what you have as yours looks very small and flat, and I'm not sure if other insects make a similae eggcase. But that is the first thing that I thought it resembled. http://bugguide.net/node/view/342431/bgimage
