Field Notes

Description:

A mostly brown bird, a little bigger than a blackbird, with a few white feathers at the top of the tail.

Habitat:

This bird appeared at a feed station in my garden which backs onto a Norfolk farm. There is also a small deciduous woodland close by.

Notes:

It seemed lighter in colour than a female blackbird and was slightly larger. It can be seen on a suet block with a blackbird, and although the blackbird is closer to the camera, this unknown bird looks larger.

Species ID Suggestions

Common Blackbird

Turdus merula

Hi Faredin, I am not convinced that this is a female blackbird because it was about 2 inches larger than the blackbirds in the garden, and it had a small but distinctive white patch on its rump. Is such variation usual in blackbirds? Also, the blackbirds in our garden tend to stay around all day whereas this bird stayed for a few minutes then left, so it did not appear to be "one of the family".
