We actually found this insect in our basement and have never seen one like it! Any help identifying it would be great-my kids are studying insects right now.

I agree, a camel cricket of some kind.
Seems to like some kind of cricket from the Infraorder Tettigoniidea which includes Katydids, Camel Crickets, and relatives. I'm not sure what specific kind it is. But you may want to look through these until someone offers a better ID. Look specially in the Camel Crickets group. http://bugguide.net/node/view/595687/bgpage?from=0
