Field Notes

Description:

Caps were really withered and drooping, very black and REALLY sticky. I pulled a leaf off one to get a good picture, and I had to be careful not to damage the fungus as it was stuck pretty good. There was a brownish, sort of caramel-coloured goop around the base of both.

Habitat:

Found in a damp grassy area under an oak tree, near a small lake. Lots of dead leaves etc around, and quite shaded.

Notes:

I have no idea what these things are, any help is appreciated.

Thanks guys! Gully.moy, I actually didn't see the smaller mushroom until I put the pictures up, I was in such a hurry to get back from my lunch break... I agree it would have been super helpful to see that in more detail. TheMiesMeister, I didn't know that about Amanita, that's cool! I did find a couple of in tact A. muscaria around, but they were much closer to the tree so maybe more shielded from all the rain.
This was/is an Amanita, probably A. muscaria! I've found them like this too. A. muscaria turns into a black/brownish goo too when it has been cold and wet for a couple of days.
Is that smaller one on the ground in the second picture the same species? Better pictures of that would help identify. I'd guess it was one of the Ink Cap mushrooms based on the black goo it's turned into, but the smaller, more intact mushroom doesn't look like one.
