Field Notes

Description:

Tiny dark brown beetle, maybe 1mm, oval shape, in groups and flying away when troubled, but otherwise lazy.

Habitat:

Temperate eastern Australian gardens

Notes:

Found in company of tiny weevil beetles of some sort which these guys chased away.

That would explain it, thanks for that. And I'm still trying find a suitable example for you, not much luck so fare :-(
It didn't have its wings out until just before it flew away, that photo was actually the last one taken. It flapped its shell and wings a couple of times as if to unfurl them, then flew away.
In the first picture it looks like it is newly emerged from pupa stage, as its wing are longer then it's shell. It might be a type of ladybird, there is a species that appears brown and no spots. Will see if I can find it for you.
