Field Notes

Description:

The color was brownish black, It was shaped like rugby football It looked like it was made out of twigs and mud and it connected to a branch. We found it in a tree along a path.

I'm gonna guess a "hornet" nest . A misnomer - Bald Faced Hornets aren't hornets - they are wasps closely related to Yellow Jackets. Could be them too, although YJ's prefer the ground or a rotten log or stump. Occassionally YJ's will build in a tree like this , but seldom.
