Field Notes

Description:

bright red, size of chewing gum. seeds coming out of it.

Habitat:

Temperate climate zone, BullHill hudson highlands, 1hr from nYc.

Notes:

last picture is from BreakNeck a few weeks before.

I bet they are Winterberry seeds.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilex_verticillata
Weird! Could be some strange Slime mould or a Jelly Fungus...

Thanks, I saw the same thing a few weeks ago in a different place but without the seeds, it was attached to the rock I thought, I didn't push hard could have froze. Deer were standing by 2min before I walked by this photo, don't know whats red like that this time of year that would make such pretty puke.
I don't think the red is a fungus.. the red looks like the fleshy remnants of a fruit or berry (or maybe a seed casing like you see on magnolia seeds) that either exploded on their own through some process or was chewed up and spit out or pooped out by passing a bird or animal... hard teo tell what the hint of white is - whether its some fuzzy mold or remannts of vomit or bird poop... :/
