Field Notes

Description:

I'm guessing that this is a ladybird. It's the abdomen that is bright red and the wing covers are translucent brown. I'm not sure if the 2 white spots are real spots or debris. Size about 4mm long and very rounded. Either its front feet or its antennae are yellow as showing in the first photo, it ran around to fast to observe much detail on the live beetle.

Habitat:

"house" (cocoon?) attached to upper surface of a leaf of orange tree.

Notes:

I found a number of empty, open cocoons then came across one that was still closed and looked red inside. I put the leave in a container and waited, 3 days later this little beetle had emerged. (I have photos of the intact cocoon but I can't access them right now.) After attempting to photograph the little guy I took it back to the orange trees and it flew off, angling steeply upwards showing a vivid scarlet abdomen.
